UX TH community is a non-profit community. our vision is growth UX knowledge in Thailand to create great environment work by meet up sharing and conference.
I have been taken the step up to be a project manager to organize 200 people event, ‘Openspace’, involve in planning concept, Co-create vision and facilitate staff team to achieve event.
Openspace is one of the series events of UX TH in 2018 which is different from the Main conference in terms of attendee size and we aim to do more practical knowledge.
We aim to focus on making UX knowledge comfortable for UX newbies by sharing experiences from usual people to reduce the barrier of the expert one-man show.
I have a question on how does this event could look like? I have been started with exploring the original version of Openspace in other countries and also a similar event format in Thailand.
Original Open Space
Open Space is the event format that has been initiated by the others country, They try to create the format to make a safe space for everyone and reduce the barrier to preparation, participants who would like to initiate the topic don’t need to prepare slide.
4 Universal guideline
Whoever comes is the right people.
Whenever start is the right time.
When it's over, it's mean over.
Whatever happens, it's the only thing could have.
Competitor Research in country
There are a few Open Space formats that already happen in Thailand. Example Agile Thailand or Bar Camp Kaset.
Observation
Flexible format. - Users can walk in and walk out from the session.
Even the Openspace is open for everyone to be the speaker but you need to be bold and dare to fail. - Some session doesn’t get attention from people, There are just a few people join.
From all insight and assumptions, I have been started to craft the vision.
Thanachai Wangchaisri
Age: 30-35 yrs.
Natcha Prapaporn
Age: 25-33 yrs.
"UX is more like a new world for me, exciting to explore!"
Goal
Try to understand more UX fields.
Would like to have a connection with others.
Frustration
I would like to listen to more sharing.
Not much budget to attend the quality event.
Most knowledge from well-known speakers can’t apply to my context.
"I am proud to be a part of the team."
Goal
I would like to understand more seriously UX.
I would like to find and be close with other people who work in the UX field.
Frustration
Even I organize the event but I don’t have time to attend.
Organizing and meeting after work make me feel exhausting.
Ice-breaking & encouraging staff's learning curve.
Give the attendee topic to debate on the funny topic. Example Pros and Cons of Agile and Waterfall, also encourage staff to facilitate the session.
Sharing practical Knowledge.
To make sure that our event format will fit with Thai behavior, we decided to add a mini-conference session at the morning phase to inspire and fire up to have more input to discuss more on the discussion table.
Discussion table from usual people.
we let people start to initiate discussion each table for each topic, also you can move around to other tables to still keep your learning motivation.
Flexible event is hard to control the motivation of the attendee.
After late noon people start to go back home.
The voice war issue.
The venue is open space air, this becomes to be a problem of the voice while speaker for each group starts to talk.
Po responsibilities
A lot of things for PO need to learn, event managing / Budget/staff's relationship.
Lastly, I want to Kudos all these faces, All speakers, All supporters, All staff to be a part of my event, helping me to create a great experience, being advisory, give me a shoulder to cry. Feedback me and then finally grow up together!
